Today we celebrate Labor Day and la fête du muguet.
Muguet, also known as Lily of the Valley, is a delicate and beautifully scented flower that captures the essence of springtime. It was during the Middle Ages that it first traveled from Japan to Europe. Considered a lucky charm, it was offered to King Charles IX the first of May, 1851. It was then that he decided to offer it to the ladies of the court every 1st of May. A tradition was born.
Fast-track to 1886, the labor movement is sparked in Chicago, demanding an 8-hour work week and better labor conditions. It would take 30 years for France to catch on. In 1919, the 8-hour work week is finally ratified by the Senate and May 1st is chosen to celebrate.
Moving beyond labor history, it is worth noting that Muguet has been a significant source of inspiration for perfumers and jewelers alike. From Dior to Lalique, muguet has inspired and captured many hearts.
